A Frozen 6th Birthday Party

Hendrik celebrated his 6th birthday party on 21 June 2014. He had chosen the Disney movie “Frozen” as his birthday party theme. We didn’t have Elsa and Anna in the decorations so as to keep it away from being girly. Hendrik pointed out that it is not a girly movie as there are a lot of boys in it – there were Kristoff and his male reindeer Sven, Prince Hans, Olaf who happened to be a male snowman, Wandering Oaken shop owner, the Duke of Weselton, and even the giant Marshmallow created by Elsa was also a male.

Frozen was actually the 3rd theme he had chosen for his party this year. Earlier in May he said he wanted “Super Why” from the TV series he used to watch at home. Then came SpongeBob Squarepants when he started watching YouTube videos of SpongeBob. Then, 3 weeks before his birthday came I brought home the Frozen DVD I borrowed from the library. He liked it so much that he would watch the movie 4 times a day. He liked the music and the songs and also Kristoff and Sven. That’s when he decided to change his birthday party theme to Frozen. We finally decided on it and told him to not change any more. He discovered Toy Story a week before his birthday but he didn’t mention about changing his party theme. He stood firm with our decision and agreement.

Hendrik was very hands-on in the preparations. He wanted the real Kristoff costume as seen in the movies, but it was impossible for us to find one in the shops. So we convinced him that we just buy him long-sleeve shirt and a jacket to go with it, which he accepted. He also had a say when Daddy was doing his e-invite. And of course he helped out in putting up the banner and snowflake decorations at home.

Towards the end of the party, Hendrik showed off his talent in playing the keyboard to the remaining select friends. He played a number of songs before agreeing to hit the sack at 11:30 in the evening to think that he woke up as early as 7:30am to help us in the preparations on the day of his party. Despite being tired we saw that he was excited and happy with his birthday party.  =)

5th Birthday

When we asked Hendrik a few weeks before his 5th birthday if he wanted to have a party, he answered us with a “no”. We didn’t know his reasons, but Joseph and I were thankful coz it saved us from doing all the preparations for a kiddie party – party theme, decorations, games, food, etc. Joseph then suggested that since Hendrik didn’t want one (like we used to have the previous 4 years), why not we check-in a hotel to have an intimate celebration as a family. It would also be our staycation before I go back to work from maternity leave and before Hendrik goes back to school from his semester break. Besides, Daddy had been telling me this idea for a long time, but we haven’t done it until Hendrik’s birthday.

We know Hendrik likes to stay in hotels. Whenever we have our yearly family holiday out of the country we would always see his excitement especially when we enter our comfy hotel room. So, when Hendrik agreed to the idea we booked a room for 3 days 2 nights stay at The Sentosa Resort and Spa from 20 June to 22 June 2013.

Hendrik’s birthday week was also the hazy week in Singapore where PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) readings reached a record high and “hazardous” level of 401 on Friday, 21 June 2013. Even inside our close air conditioned hotel room, we can still smell traces of the harmful smoke. Singapore NEA (National Environment Agency) noted the PSI values as: 0-50 (good); 51-100 (moderate); 101-200 (unhealthy); 201-300 (very unhealthy); above 300 (hazardous). Since we cannot explore the spa hotel’s grounds and the surrounding Sentosa Island attractions because of the haze, we were confined to our hotel room and spent most of our stay inside.

Buffet breakfast in the hotel was delish. It was also pleasant and relaxing as we were able to take our own sweet time since we did not have any other itinerary due to haze.

Since we just stayed indoors for the whole duration of our staycation, we had a lot of time for photo shooting. Daddy surely didn’t let this opportunity pass without snapping pictures of us.

Hendrik enjoys the foam bath so much that his hotel stay wouldn’t be complete without it.

On our last day, Hendrik told us that he wanted to stay in the hotel for 1 more day. As much as we also love the idea, we cannot afford it anymore. Hahahaha!!!  =) This just showed that Hendrik liked it. He liked his birthday treat which was apart from the usual birthday parties he had. We told Hendrik that we will just do it again next time. Yes, there will be next staycationS… =)

Happy birthday mi love!
